What is an endowment and why is it important?
Academic institutions will frequently control an endowment fund that finances a portion of the operating or capital requirements of the institution. When someone gives to endowment, the principal amount is invested. The original investment gains interest and, after a certain period of time, a portion of that interest can be spent according to the College’s policies and the donor’s wishes. The principal and a portion of the remaining earnings are then reinvested, providing funds for the lifetime of the college.
