The Susquehanna river is one of the main landmarks of Oneonta. It
begins at Otsego Lake near Cooperstown, New York, and runs 444 miles
though southern New York and the northern and central ranges of the
Appalachian Mountains in Pennsylvania. The river eventually ends in
Maryland, emptying into the Chesapeake Bay. With an average daily rush
of 22 billion gallons of water, the Susquehanna is the largest
contributor of freshwater to the Bay.
Running along what is now Interstate 88 in Oneonta, the Susquehanna
is home to a healthy assortment of wildlife. It also supplies Oneonta
with entertainment such as
fishing and boating, and the annual
General
Clinton Canoe Regatta. In addition, The
Susquehanna Greenway
provides riverside hiking and wildlife observation.
