The Science Discovery Center: A Great Field Trip Destination!
The A.J. Read Science Discovery Center makes a great destination for a half-day field trip (or a full day if you combine it with lunch and another activity). We have a variety of exhibits on different fields of science and engineering, and our digital planetarium is one of the best in the region. There is no cost to visit us, and there is even support available to help off-set the cost of your visit (see below).
Planning Your Trip
Field Trips can be scheduled during our open hours Wednesday-Saturday and on other days/times by special arrangement. The Center's exhibits are great for all ages, though most of our visitors are elementary and Middle School students. Most visits are at least two hours, and include an hour at the Science Discovery Center and an hour at the SUNY Oneonta Planetarium. We can also add an electricity demo to the day's schedule (other demos will be available soon). Given the size of the SDC, we prefer to have groups of around 60 students maximum. This enables us to create two sections that rotate through the SDC and the planetarium.

Financial Aid: The Wal-Mart Transportation Fund
The A.J. Read Science Discovery Center received a community grant from Wal-Mart to help make our informal educational programing more widely accessible to school districts in Chenango, Delaware and Otsego counties.
We are happy to announce that we are now accepting applications for A.J. Read Science Discovery Center Wal-Mart Transport Grants. Grants will be awarded on a rolling basis until all funds are used up. Need will be applicant-determined. School districts planning field trips should assess if they require transport assistance or not. Applications are welcome for first-time visits from school districts as well as from districts seeking to expand how many grades/students they can send.
Our goal for this grant project is to enable less-resourced and more distant school districts to take advantage of the great resource that is the A.J. Read Science Discovery Center and SUNY Oneonta Planetarium.
The individual grants will cover the cost of transport for two buses including fuel, driver costs, and any mileage expenses. The largest award funded will be approximately $150.
