Candidates use a wide range of instructional practices, approaches, methods, and curriculum materials to support reading and writing instruction. |

| Standard 3: Assessment, Diagnosis, & Evaluation | |
|
Candidates use a variety of assessment tools and practices to plan and evaluate effective reading instruction. |

| Standard 4: Creating a Literate Environment | |
|
Candidates create a literate environment that fosters reading and writing by integrating foundational knowledge, use of instructional practices, approaches and methods, curriculum materials, and the appropriate use of assessments. |

| Standard 5: Professional Development | |
|
Candidates view professional development as a career-long effort and responsibility. |
|
Three literacy programs are offered, leading to literacy certification
in (Birth - Grade 6) or (Grades 5-12). To ensure quality, students must
be admitted to programs before registering
for courses, unless they have permission from the graduate director or
department chair.
No more than 9 s.h. may be transferred into this program. Courses with
grades of “B-” through “F” are not transferable.
Admission Requirements Master of Science in Education (M.S. Ed.)
Literacy Education
Submit a completed application and the non-refundable fee.
Submit a copy of New York State initial teaching certification in a functionally relevant area.*
Submit an official transcript of an earned Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college.
Have achieved an undergraduate GPA of 2.8 overall and 3.0 in the major field during the last two years of undergraduate work.
Submit official scores from the GRE General Test with a minimum verbal score of 450 and from the Analytical Writing Test a minimum score of 4.5.
Have earned at least 3 credits of developmental psychology, child or adolescent development.
Have earned at least 6 credits in reading or the teaching of reading.
Admission materials are accepted for summer, fall or spring semesters. At the present time, students can only be full time during the first academic year if admitted during the fall semester.
*Teaching certificates from other states are considered.
