CONCERT BAND – DECEMBER 9
On Tuesday December 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Hunt Union Ballroom, the State University Concert Band, under the direction of Rene Prins, will present music relating to the performance date and the dates immediately surrounding it. This programming contrivance provides a collection of pieces with a great variety of styles and challenges. On December 9, 1837 the celebrated waltz composer Emil Waldteufel was born in Strasbourg. The band will perform a transcription of his most famous composition The Skater Waltz, which contains musical picture painting of this wintertime sport. December 8 marks the birth of the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius who in 1897 wrote a collection of works entitled the Karelia Suite to represent the history and beauty of this northern country province and the Concert Band will play two of these views. The second week of December marks several important events for the history of the Netherlands, so a contemporary band composition, entitled Amsterdam Pictures by Kees Vlak will be presented. The work is strongly influenced by the rich jazz tradition of this cosmopolitan city and, as with the other pieces mentioned, it musically presents a strong visual image of the community. December 11 marks the birth of Hector Berlioz, one of the most radical and innovative composers of the early Romantic period. The Concert Band will honor this birthday with what might be the most demanding transcription on the concert, Selections from the Damnation of Faust a work taking him almost 25 years to complete. This version, rewritten for band rather than voices and orchestra, was completed 100 years ago by the British bandmaster Frederick Godfree. Finally, two days before this performance, December 7, is probably remembered by most as Pearl Harbor Day, the day that brought the United States into World II. A well-known documentary, Victory at Sea, was produced, containing wartime footage of the conflict. The outstanding score for this documentary was written by Richard Rodgers, the great American theater composer. This transcription for concert band is a magnificent and inspiring closer for this performance. Admission is complimentary. All are invited to attend. For information phone x3415.

COLLEGE PARTNERS WITH NYC SCHOOL TO MAKE COLLEGE A REALITY
The Division of Education at the SUNY College at Oneonta has entered into a unique college partnership program with Bensonhurst elementary school PS 247 in Brooklyn. The program is designed to provide the school's students with information and a connection to SUNY Oneonta to help them learn about the college experience. For SUNY Oneonta, the partnership will provide opportunities for Education majors to gain experience in working with elementary students. The partnership between SUNY Oneonta and the school is being coordinated by Dennis Banks, Chair of the College's Secondary Education Department. PS 247 Principal Christopher Ogno developed the program in collaboration with Ivy Cohen Corporate Communications with support from the non-profit organization PENCIL. Through the College Partnership Program, PS 247 students will participate in a field trip to SUNY Oneonta, and SUNY Oneonta representatives will visit their partner classroom to conduct seminars, engage students in educational activities, or share personal experiences with them. A PS 247 Parent College Resource Center will provide parents information about college admissions, programs, and financial aid. PS 247 enrolls 684 children in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade with 75% of the students coming from families whose incomes are below the poverty line. Less than 50% of the students come from English-speaking families, and 21 languages are represented in the school's population. More information is available from Dr. Banks at x3075.
STUDENTS HANDLING EXAMS
Students must not be involved in the preparation, duplication, transportation or distribution of examinations. In addition, students including undergraduate teaching assistants, must not be permitted to grade, or in any manner process tests or papers. This includes using the Scan Tron machines to grade tests or quizzes and distributing graded materials to other students. If you have questions regarding this, please contact Maureen P. Artale, College Registrar, at x3216.
REMINDER ON POSTING GRADES
Federal law (FERPA) prohibits posting grades using student names and/or identification numbers. However, it is permissible to post by code name or number (not the Oneonta I.D. number, social security number, or any part thereof) agreed to by the student and the faculty member. Wherever you post grades, please scramble the names on the roster before assigning codes so that the list does not reflect an alphabetical listing of your roster. It is also against FERPA regulations to leave students’ graded work in a general pick up area. Graded course work must be returned individually to students. Please be aware that under no circumstances may a listing of student names and ID numbers, or any part thereof, be posted for any reason. Violations of this law can result in termination of Federal funding to the college. Questions regarding the privacy of student records should be directed to Maureen P. Artale, College Registrar at x3216 or via e-mail at artalemp@oneonta.edu.

Your bottles/cans may be dropped off at the Oneonta Redemption Center, 459 Chestnut Street. Just tell them it is for the Sorbera Family. Thank you all in advance for your generosity.

INFORMATION ON SUBMITTING PAPERS TO AN ANTI-PLAGIARISM SERVICE
If you are using an anti-plagiarism service such as www.turnitin.com, you must remove the student’s name and assign a code name to each paper you submit. The code name must not be the student’s ID number or any part there of and should only be known to you. Using the student’s name or ID number is a violation of the students FERPA rights because you are releasing personally identifiable information without his/her written consent. If you have any questions on FERPA please contact Maureen P. Artale, College Registrar at x3216 or via e-mail at artalemp@oneonta.edu.
