SUNY “Guidelines for the Selection of a President”

Statutory Authority

    1. The legal authority to appoint a president rests with the SUNY Board of Trustees.
    2. The College Council is expected to recommend three acceptable candidates to the Chancellor.
    3. The Chancellor provides SUNY Board of Trustees with a copy of the College Council recommendations and recommends one candidate to the SUNY Board for their consideration.


Search Committee
Unless otherwise agreed upon in advance by the Chancellor and the College Council Chair, the search committee consists of:

    1. Four members of the College Council (including the chair, who generally serves as the chair of the search committee);
    2. Six members of the full-time faculty (elected by secret ballot);
    3. One student;
    4. One alumni representative;
    5. One Foundation Board member;
    6. One dean;
    7. One professional employee or support staff member.

Others Directly Involved (non-voting)

    1. Chancellor’s liaison
    2. Search consultant
    3. Staff person to support the chair and the committee


Search Committee Duties

    1. The process works confidentially up to the point of finalists.
    2. Prepares document describing the needs of the institution, and the type and style of leadership desired.
    3. From applicant pool, identifies approximately 20 viable candidates and checks references.
    4. Narrows pool to approximately 12, conducts brief on-site interviews with candidates for 60-90 minutes each.
    5. Narrows pool to approximately 3-5, invites finalists for campus visits and completes open reference checks.
    6. Candidates (finalists) names are made public.
    7. Search committee reports its recommendations to the College Council.
    8. College Council submits 3 names to the Chancellor.
