Interlibrary Loan Information
- What is Interlibrary Loan?
- Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service used to provide access to research materials that are not owned by the library. ILLiad is the name of our software system.
- Who may use Interlibrary Loan?
- Current SUNY College at Oneonta faculty, staff and students are eligible for this service.
- What can be requested on ILL?
- We will try to borrow almost any item for which we have an adequate bibliographic citation, however, the following are frequently not available for loan from other libraries: * Very new publications * Reference materials * Theses or dissertations * Whole volumes or issues of periodicals * Audiovisual materials * Rare, fragile or multi-volume sets * Textbooks Standard interlibrary loan practice restricts the borrowing of textbooks for current classes.
- What does ILL cost?
- Most ILL materials can be obtained from lending libraries for our patrons without charge. If there will be a cost, the library will contact the patron to determine if the item is still needed before submitting the request. Fines for overdue interlibrary loan materials are $1.00 per day per item.
- How long does it take to get something on ILL?
- A request for ILL materials may take a few hours to 2-4 weeks depending on the type of material and its source. Most requests are filled in approximately a week.
- How are ILL requests submitted?
- All requests are submitted electronically, either via the ILLiad link on the library web page or via the ILLiad link in the 360 Find It! menu. You will need to register once with the ILLiad system.
- How will I be notified?
- Notification is by e-mail. Please be sure to include your Oneonta e-mail address and phone number when you register with ILLiad.
- Where do I pick up materials I requested on ILL?
- ILL materials are available for pick-up at Circulation Desk during all hours that the library is open. Photocopies of articles are delivered electronically unless we receive a printed copy from the lending library. Items with an "in-library use only" restriction are picked up and returned to the Circulation Desk each time they are used.
- How long can I keep material borrowed via ILL?
- Most ILL loans are for four weeks. Some libraries permit renewals if they are requested in advance of the due date.
- What if the book or periodical is available at Hartwick College?
- The SUNY Oneonta community can borrow books or other resources from Hartwick College and visit Stevens-German Library to use their electronic databases or photocopy articles from their periodicals. We do not request material from Hartwick but will obtain books or articles from another library even if Hartwick does own them.
- What if Milne Library owns the book but it is checked out?
- We can request it from another library. Please mention that it is unavailable in the notes field of your request. Otherwise, circulation staff can put a 'hold' on the book and notify you when it is returned.
- What if the book is at the Biological Field Station?
- Request material from the Biological Field State at the Circulation Desk.
- Where is the ILL Office?
- The ILL Office is located in Milne Library on the first floor, Room 109.
- How can the ILL staff be contacted?
- The phone number for ILL is 436-2726 and the e-mail address is libloan@oneonta.edu. Patrons can also visit the office between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm.
- How do copyright restrictions affect interlibrary loan?
- The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or other reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
- Is there a limit to the number of requests?
- An individual can have twenty active requests at one time. As these are completed (articles received or books returned), new requests can be submitted.
