Catskill Wednesday 1. PM

14 Sept. 1836

 My Dear Wife.

I arrived here Monday morning’s boat, went immediately into our long Ejectment cause. First day ‘till 8 at night & each succeeding day beginning at 8. morn. & till 8 at night, 1 hours intermission.

One of our Jurymen has just been taken sick & we have suspended; if he gets better we shall go on-otherwise the cause will be put over. I have several other causes if this breaks off & I choose to stay. But I think I shall “cut & run” – so many pressing matters at home.

I wrote you on Sunday & sent on by Mr. Beach going to Unadilla-to be left at Robinson’s this morning-one for you, one for Oakley. I can only say I am extremely fatigued & the weather is excessively hot. I suppose you will by your next, fix the time when you prefer coming down (to New York City). Yourself, Mary Ann, Miss Co., our 4 children & 2 girls will make 9. You had therefore better take an extra which can be obtained for 30 dols, and will not only be more comfortable but will be more economical. You may have a carriage by giving timely notice sent down so as to start at 5 A.M. arrive here by 6 P.M. or 7 will be in time for night boat. The best way will be to go directly to the dock, and stipulate for as little change of carriage as possible.

I have been thus minute because our young gentlemen seem almost to disregard detail, and the greater care will be necessarily imposed upon you to enforce it. Robinson will charge all stage fare to me.

Your fare down in the Boat will be:

                         Adults – 5 @ 2.25        -           12.50

                        Children – 2 half-fare                   2.25

                        2 servants ˝                                2.25

                                                                        $17.00

If Wm. Attends to it, this will be fine. You must have on hand when you start at least 30 dols & should have 40 dols. If you wish to give any direction….write immediately. I design this for tonight’s mail & if anything occurs shall open & add to it.

Remember me to your guests. And to our chicks.

                                                                         Affectionately yours,

                                                                        S. Sherwood
