Excerpts from page 26:
(Continued from p. 25) "...is the difference of improvement - the soil mainly the same a light sandy soil intermixed with gravel - productive - [] and considered salubrious - the ridge road [] from west to east on a rise of 6 or 10 feet from the general surface - & is generally unbroken..."
Oct 3 Rochester the pride of the west, is at the junction of the Canal + Genesee River; and united more of natural advantages + artificial improv[]s than any of the western villages - the hydraulic machinery is here extensive and tobe applied in various departments of the mechanical arts with profit - there are from 4 to 600 houses, stores, shops + many of the buildings are erected of stone + brick, the public buildings are not yet numerous, 5 or 6 churches are built and building - the Canal here crosses the Genessee river about 12 feet above its surface - and the Aquaduct is formed of hewn stone, supported by 11 stone arches of red granite for strength, & beauty, perhaps there is no one point in this stupendous work of human hands that exceeds this part of the Canal-"
