Background: Laura Sherwood, husband Samuel, and two of her children, Ann Eliza and Samuel Augustus left their home in Delhi, NY in September 1823 for a lengthy tour of upstate New York. Although the method of transportation for the majority of the trip is not clear, at least one entry indicates they rode on horseback. The journal describes people, scenery, accommodations, villages, and the opening of a canal aqueduct in Rochester. The journal abruptly ends before they return home.

Excerpt from page 18:

"A few miles west of Lenovia, a small [] village [] ten miles east of Batavia, we were overtaken by an Indian to us an object of great curiosity and admiration his movements were graceful and agile his form tall well proportioned his countenance good his dress quite decent consisting of a kind of blue [] pantaloons good stockings and shoes a good hat with his hair hanging on his shoulders."

At B we procured an excellent supper good room and beds. Sept 27 rose early resolved to be industrious mending gloves and write my journal saw the same Indian pass with a waggon and oxen. thought him even dignifi[]."
