Background: Laura Sherwood, husband Samuel, and two of her children, Ann Eliza and Samuel Augustus left their home in Delhi, NY in September 1823 for a lengthy tour of upstate New York. Although the method of transportation for the majority of the trip is not clear, at least one entry indicates they rode on horseback. The journal describes people, scenery, accommodations, villages, and the opening of a canal aqueduct in Rochester. The journal abruptly ends before they return home.

Excerpt from page 16:

(Continued from p. 15)"...accomodations at Mr. Sumners. We were awakened bef[] light by the discharge of two guns for the assembling of a hunting party  Sept 25 [] an excellent breakfast. learnt that Gennesseo the residence of Mr. Wood was thirteen miles. On our way we remarked the fruit particularly the apples were very abundant-we arrived there before noon. Surprized B who did not expect us till night. G is the [] town in Livingston County built on a gentle declivity with an enchanting view of Gennesseo flats..."
