Excerpt from page 11:
"Auburn has the appearance of an infant growing city, but can judge better tomorrow. Sept 22. Mr. S called early upon Mr. Hulbert who came and gave us an introduction to the States Prison. On our arrival was astonished to see a fine well cultivated garden tastefully arranged containing many choice plants among others [ ] modest crimson tipped flowers. One of the convicts was employed in the garden, dressed in the prison uniform. On entering the building we found it spacious cleanly and a perfect system of good regulation throughout."
