Background: Ebenezer Maxwell was born in 1783 and graduated from Union College in 1805.  He was ordained as pastor of the First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in Delhi, NY in 1812. In 1813 he married Margaret Foote, daughter of Ebenezer and Jerusha Foote of Delhi.  He died in 1840 and was buried at Arbor Hill, in Delhi, NY. The inscription on his tombstone reads: "To the memory of the Rev. Ebenezer K. Maxwell who for 27 years preached the Gospel of Christ in the Town of Delhi with fidelity, enforced by purity of moral character in the hope of glorious immorality.  He rested from his labors July 2, 1840 aged 56 years, 6 months, 2 days."

Note: Hard to read, as is the original.  Originally written in 1818. First sermon preached at the Delaware County Poor House, January 15, 1829: 26 paupers.

Inferences?

1. Let us learn that nothing can satisfy the immortal soul, but a sense of ???ing mercy and communion with the Lord of hosts. 2. Let us learn to live by “Faith” on Christ as the “beloved” of our souls. 3. Let “Sinners” remember that he against whom they rebel is none other than the “Lord of hosts”, his arm clothed with vengeance, shall strike you down to the lowest hell. Lastly! Let the children of the “Resurrection” be thank full for the ample provision, made for their spiritual nourishment and growth in grace. What tho: your course lies thru the value of “[]” divine ordinances, in the streams provided for your support, come! drink and be strong taste, and grow not weary, soon you shall ascend mount ?? and dwell in the city of  the living God; Pilgrims! Strangers! you are yet exiled in your native skies and your father’s house but methinks! I see your faces turned toward the kingdom of your fathers! Be courageous, fear not, and soon you shall be [] eternal [] Then shall you join with the nations of the saved, in his holy and triumphant Exclamation!!! O Lord of hosts, blessed is the man that trusteth in thee. AMEN.
