Background: The Voice of the People was an Anti-Rent newspaper published in Delhi New York during the height of the Anti-Rent conflict in the Delaware County New York area,  probably from about 1846-1847. The excerpt below is from Vol. II number 53,  June 1, 1847. Since there are only a handful of copies still in existence, little is known about the newspaper. The June 1, 1847  issue consists of one double sided  folded page (for a total of 4 pages) and was edited by William S. Hawley.

The article below refers to an upcoming election. On June 7, 1847 the Anti-Rent ticket came out on top. Edwin Moore defeated Colonel Amasa Parker for County Judge and Surrogate. Eventually the Equal Rights people gained enough support through the political process that the old feudal system of land leases was discontinued and many people were finally able to own the land they farmed.

Note: The Gazette was another Delhi newspaper.

Facts worth Remembering

It is a fact that our sworn enemies, those who denounced us in the bitterest terms, as men "guilty of almost every crime in the catalogue," carry in their bosoms at this hour, the same hatred for us and our cause.

It is a Fact, that they wish again to expose us to the same cruel persecution, we have but recently received at their hands.

It is a Fact, that, in order to effect the subjugation of the Equal Rights people of Delaware, they have nominated Col. Parker, for Judge and Surrogate, hoping to thereby weaken and finally overthrow the Equal Rights party.

It is a Fact, that by voting the ticket standing under the editorial head of the Gazette, we aid in again putting ourselves under the dominion of the Delhi Clique.

It is a Fact, that if the Clique, by division, succeeds in overthrowing our Equal Rights organization, it will again grind us under the iron heel of Despotism, and tauntingly tell us, "you would be fools and victims, and you are."

It is a Fact, that our only safely as a Party, lies in a full, cordial, unanimous support of the WHOLE Equal Rights Ticket.

It is a Fact, that our opponents in the village of Delhi, will heartily despise that Equal Rights man who treacherously abandons any nominee on the true Equal Rights ticket; and will call him Stupid Fool for listening to the advice of his sworn  enemies.
