1852 illustration of multi-use horse treadMost of the reproductions of manuscripts on this site are photographs. In order to make them as readable as possible on a computer screen, they have been sized accordingly.  For this reason, some images may be cut off when they are printed. If this is a problem, proceed as follows (this will work with images found on other web sites as well)

- Click with the right mouse button on the image. Click on Save Picture as. Save the image someplace where you will be able to find it again, e.g. under My Pictures

- Download the free Picasa2 software from Google http://picasa.google.com/index.html. Follow the instructions. The image can very easily be resized and printed. RECOMMENDED.

OR

- Paste the image into a word processing program such as Microsoft Word and manipulate the image until it is a size that can be printed on a single sheet of paper.

About the images:

Reproduction of most of the letters, diaries, and newspapers on this site was done with a digital camera. Digital photographs were taken in natural room light with no flash in order to assure the original documents would not be damaged in any way. Since all of the original documents on this site are over 150 years old, they were not flattened or otherwise manipulated in order to get a perfect image.  In some cases they were photographed through an archival plastic covering: reflections were sometimes unavoidable.  Some of the images may appear blurry--this is because there was so little contrast in the original (e.g. pencil on yellowed paper) that the camera was unable to get a sharp image.  The digital photographs were then manipulated first with Picasa2 and then Photoshop. Many of the documents are actually easier to read than they were in their original form.

If you have trouble reading the documents and you would like to zoom in on something, upload them into Picasa2 as mentioned under Printing.  This will allow you to enlarge the image for easier reading.
