Background: Susan Fenimore Cooper (1813 - 1894) was the oldest daughter of the writer James Fenimore Cooper of Cooperstown, NY.  She was known as a writer and naturalist.

The original volume was published in 1850. This excerpt is from the revised 1887 edition, from the University of Pennsylvania. The 1887 version is shorter than the original.
