Background: From an 1856 map of Delaware County by Jay Gould. Section of the Town of Roxbury. The boyhood home of John Burroughs is above the X in Roxbury.  Although John Burroughs and Jay Gould originally lived on farms about a mile apart, by 1856 Jay Gould's family had moved to the southern edge of the village of Roxbury.
