ASSIGNMENT: Make a virutal exhibition of 6-8 works of art on a single theme.
Using Microsoft OneNote to capture images:
- Open OneNote and open a new notes page (top right of screen).
- Find the Web page that has the image you want to capture.
- In OneNote, place the pointer on the notes page where you want to add the screen clipping.
- On the Insert menu, click Screen Clipping.
- On the web page, drag the mouse to select the image you want to capture.
- Release the mouse button, OneNote inserts the image into your notes page.
- Copy the image and paste it into another program, such as PowerPoint.
Scanning images:
The computer lab in basement of the library has six brand new scanners. Take your books and magazines there to create color digital files.
- CAMIO (Catalog of Art Museum Images Online)
- A collection of images of about 95,000 works of art from prominent museums dating from 3000 BC to the present.
Finding Images Online
- Use the Advanced Search
- Type the word or phrase that describes your theme (e.g. death, marriage, humor, angels, etc.) in the top line
- On the right, change the drop-down box to "Subject"
- Hit "Go"
- Click on "View a high-resolution full image" just above the image
- Click on "Download this image" at the top of the screen and save it
- Google Images
- An excellent place to search for images. Use the Advanced Search for better results. Try combining key words and phrases, such as "russian icon" or "death in sculpture".
- Google Books
- Thousands of books that have been digitized and can be read in part or in total are available here. If you find a book and the images are available in Google Books, use Microsoft OneNote to capture the image.
- Use the following web directories to browse by artist, time period, movement
- Art History Resources on the Web
- Massive collection of links to web pages related to art. Browse by time period or search by topic/artist/work of art.
- Artcyclopedia: Artists by Movement - "The Fine Art Search Engine"
- Explore Art
- Search the Getty Museum online art collection by keyword, or browse by type of art or by subject. Good place to look for art for comparison.
- Voice of the Shuttle: Art (Modern and Contemporary)
- Well-reputed and comprehensive set of art links.

On the library home page, under the "Find Books & Media" tab, select "Subject" from the drop down menu, and enter the key terms in the search box. Search stems of words by using the asterisk *.Search for keywords and key phrases. Look for books on a larger movement, then go to the shelves and browse books in that area (particularly in the Oversize Room on the 3rd floor).

An online database listing materials in thousands of libraries worldwide. Books are listed for Milne Library. You can search by author, title, subject, and keyword. Look for the
link to ask Milne Library to borrow a book from another library. You can check out items at Hartwick College with your SUNY Oneonta ID card.

- Yes, seriously - this is one of the best places to start! It helps you find the titles of books, which you can then search for using WorldCat and Google Books. Try searches like "love in art", "death in painting", "war in sculpture".

Finding Images in Encyclopedias & Dictionaries
- Browse through dictionaries and encyclopedias for brief articles about artists and movements. If you find an image you'd like to use, the first step will be to search for the image online using a search engine. you can take the book to the computer lab in the basement of the library, and use the scanner there to scan and save the image.

- Academic Search Complete
- Provides full text for selected scholarly journals and popular magazines across the disciplines, including art history.
- Art Index
- Indexes art publications, including periodicals, yearbooks, and museum bulletins from 1984 to the present. There is no full text, but click on the WilsonLink logo to see if the article is available in another database.
- Arts & Humanities Search or AH Search (FirstSearch)
- A citation index to journals in the arts & humanities.
- Humanities International Complete
- Includes all data from Humanities International Index (indexing to more than 2,100 journals and 2 million records) as well as access to about 900 full-text journals.
- JSTOR
- Provides full text of over 300 scholarly journals in a range of subject areas including art and art history. Use the Advanced Search tab and limit your search to Type: Article; Language: English; and to the disciplines that apply (e.g. Art & Art History).
- Periodicals Archive Online (PAO)
- Provides access to back files of over 550 complete full-image journals spanning 200 years in the arts, humanities, and social sciences.

- Find Journals Tab from the library home page
You may want to browse art journals to look for images. Here are a few examples. When using online databases, select the full text link to the PDF whenever possible, as this will contain all of the images. They will not be in color, but you can search the web for an image once you have the name of a particular work of art. You may also want to order a copy of the article through Interlibrary Loan. See the instructions below.

- To find journals and magazines on art, select "Title contains all words" in the dropdown box on the left, then type in the word art. Click on the link to the database to browse or search the specific magazine.
- You can also select "Art, Architecture & Applied Arts" from the dropdown box labeled "--Please select a subject category--."
- To search by the title of a journal, use the Find Journals tab on the library home page and type in selected words from the title or the entire title of the magazine..

Locating the full text of the article in electronic form:

If there is no full text with the citation for an article, click on Find It! If a full text of the article is available in another database, you will be linked directly to that database, where you can locate the article in the appropriate volume, or search for the article by title or author.

You can also determine whether a periodical is available electronically by entering the periodical title in the search box on the library home page under the Find Journals tab. If the title is available in electronic form, check the coverage, and click on the database link(s) and search for the item(s) needed. If the journal or magazine is available in the library, a link will take you to the library catalog which will list what years the library owns.

Requesting an article on Interlibrary Loan:

If you find an article from a periodical that is not available at Milne Library in any form, you can request the article through ILLiad - Interlibrary Loan through a link on the record for the article needed (see computer screen that comes up after you click on Find It!). Click on ILLiad Interlibrary Loan Request Form. You need to be registered to submit ILL requests. See a librarian for help.
