New Technology Training Opportunities

The Teaching, Learning and Technology Center announces an ambitious training schedule for the summer beginning in May with Blackboard End of Semester Planning next week. We will also be offering expanded training for Microsoft Office, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and Mac based courses over the course of the summer. New Webservers in test mode

Computer Services have brought two new web servers on line in test mode.  These servers will provide the latest operating system, upgraded application software and most importantly a massive increase in storage space. 

The contents of the college website have been copied over to these new servers but the public still sees the site as hosted on the old machines.  We would like site authors to look at their sites thoroughly over the next few weeks - you can visit any site on the new server by substituting "wwwtest" for "www" in the address.  So the library site, for example, is viewable on the new servers at http://wwwtest.oneonta.edu/library

The entire website will be periodically re-replicated to the new servers over the next few weeks, so don't panic if the copy is a little out-of-date - the main thing is to make sure that everything works the same as the existing version on the live site.  This mostly applies to anything exotic like scripts, forms, database connections and such. 

If you find anything amiss, be sure to let your support team know about it - for faculty and academic departmental websites this would be Jim Greenberg of the Teaching, Learning and Technology Center at 2701.  For administrative sites it would be Jennifer Knapp of the Web Development Office at 3031.

 

Reminder for Administrative Secure Desktop Users

Secure Desktop has many distinct advantages for the Administrative Computer User.  It automatically backs up any files on the desktop or in the My Documents folder, and it saves the user's profile.  This means that if a user's computer breaks down, a different machine can be substituted and there is very little downtime.  Also, any necessary updates for the computer's operating system or application software can be pushed out to the Secure Desktop machine without the user having to worry about it.

The key thing to remember about updates for Secure Desktop users is that they are distributed on Friday evenings.  This means that the Secure Desktop user should turn off their computer (and monitor, printer, etc) every evening when they go home, except for Friday evening.  Users should log out of the computer but leave it on.  The monitor and printer can be turned off.  If there are updates to be applied, it will occur late on Friday and the machine will automatically shut down when the updates are complete.

 

ICE that Cell Phone

As we all know, an awful lot of people carry cell phones.  When paramedics come to the aid of an unresponsive person, one of the things they often look for besides identification is a phone.  Knowing the phone number and cellular provider lets emergency workers find out who you are if you can't tell them. 

But why make it that hard?  Paramedics in Britain thought up the idea of asking people to put an entry labeled "ICE" in their contacts.  It stands for "In Case of Emergency", and it's a list of people that you would want to have called in case you were unable to speak for yourself.  This could be especially useful if you have a medical condition that is not immediately obvious, or if you would like certain people to know right away if you have met with an unfortunate accident.
