New Website to Track Construction

A great deal of renovation and new construction is scheduled for the Summer of 2005 though some of it will begin as early as mid-April.  The Office of Web Development has been working with the Office of Facilities and Safety to help everyone keep up with these projects and how they will affect movement around campus.  A new set of webpages is available at http://www.oneonta.edu/admin/facilities/summer_2005 which show all of the projects scheduled as well as a week-by-week timeline with bulletins and updates.

These pages  will also provide additional information where applicable showing what landscaping projects will look like when completed or showing photos of work in progress.  A link will be placed on the college homepage later in the spring to make access faster and easier.

The image to the right shows a sample of the project maps that accompany the pages.  This particular map shows the area affected by a project to renovate a fuel line that goes between a fuel storage tank on the western edge of the campus and the Heating Plant.  The yellow and black pattern shows areas where the public may not go during construction.  It should be noted that many of these construction areas block access to sidewalks and some roads for certain periods - visitors and staff are advised to become familiar with the project overview to avoid unpleasant surprises.

Telecommunications to upgrade Campus Network

Two projects will be improving network service to the campus in the near future.  Communications between the campus switch room (the central hub for the entire network) and the two server rooms will be upgraded to gigabit speed, roughly ten times faster than is currently available.  Meanwhile, over the next two years all of the network switches in campus buildings will be replaced with new units.  These two initiatives will improve reliability and security of our campus network while also permitting future growth.

Wireless networking now requires authentication

As noted in the December 2004 CATPrints, users of the wireless computer network now must enter a valid username and password at the beginning of each session.  Certain kinds of computer hardware may have to use special procedures on the wireless network; call the Help Desk at 4567 if you have problems establishing or maintaining a connection.

New Calendar Dates available for Outlook

Users of Outlook can download a set of pre-entered campus events for inclusion in their online calendar.  These events are grouped in categories based on "audience".  There are sections for Academic Calendars, employee calendars for different bargaining units, and groups of religious holidays based on denomination.

To obtain these dates and integrate them into your calendar, open Outlook and then use Internet Explorer to visit http://www.oneonta.edu/calendar.hol.  You will be presented with a dialog box listing all of the calendar sets that are available:

Choose the categories you wish to load into Outlook and then click OK.

Later this year we will add new calendar information as it becomes available.
