Configuration of Microsoft Outlook 2007 for IMAP

This article will guide you through the steps to configure Outlook 2007 so that you can connect to your Oneonta e-mail through IMAP

Configuration of Microsoft Outlook 2007 for IMAP If you are configuring Outlook 2007 as part of a new installation of Microsoft Office 2007, the Outlook 2007 Startup Wizard will be displayed the first time you open Outlook. The first four steps shown below will guide you through that wizard to setup Outlook for you IMAP account. NOTE: If you are upgrading to Outlook 2007 from a previous version of Outlook, and you are not presented with the Outlook 2007 Startup Wizard, skip the first four steps below and start with Step 5. Otherwise, if the wizard appears, start with Step 1. To configure a new installation of Microsoft Outlook 2007 for use with IMAP:

1. Open Outlook 2007.

2. Allow the Configuring Outlook dialog box to run until the Outlook 2007 Startup wizard opens.

3. Click Next.

4. Select Yes, and click Next.
Proceed to Step 7 to continue following along with the Outlook 2007 Startup Wizard if this is a first time setup on your computer for Outlook 2007.

5. If you are not using the Outlook 2007 Startup Wizard, this is your starting point. Within Outlook go to the Tools menu and select Account Settings...

6. On the E-mail tab, click the New button.

7. At the bottom of the dialog box, select the "Manually configure server settings or additional server types" checkbox and click Next.

8. Select Internet E-mail as the e-mail service type and click Next.

9. As shown below, enter in your information:
Your Name, i.e. John Q. Public
Oneonta Email Address, i.e. publicjq@oneonta.edu
Account Type - IMAP
Incoming mail server (IMAP) imap.oneonta.edu
Outgoing mail server (SMTP) smtp.oneonta.edu
Oneonta User Name, i.e. publicjq
Oneonta Email Password
IMPORTANT: If you check your e-mail from your home computer and that computer connects to the internet via Road-Runner or another Internet Service Provider and you don't use the SUNY Oneonta free dial-up service, you may need to enter outgoing mail server settings specific to your Internet Service Provider. If this is the case, you would need to contact your Internet Service Provider to obtain that information.

10. From the Add New E-mail Account dialog box, click on More Settings...

11. Click the Outgoing Server tab.

12. Click the checkbox for My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication. Leave the default setting to Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
IMPORTANT: If you check your e-mail from your home computer and that computer connects to the internet via Road-Runner or another Internet Service Provider and you don't use the SUNY Oneonta free dial-up service, you may need to enter outgoing mail server settings specific to your Internet Service Provider. If this is the case, you would need to contact your Internet Service Provider to obtain that information.

13. Click the Advanced tab.

14. For the two drop-down boxes under the Server Port Numbers field, use SSL for Incoming server (IMAP) and TLS for Outgoing server (SMTP) encrypted connection types. Change the outgoing SMTP server to port 587.

15. Click OK, then click Next.

16. Click Finish to close the wizard.

17. Click Close.

18. Now that you are connecting to your Oneonta e-mail via IMAP, your mailbox will look similar to this:
Important note: Your IMAP Inbox is listed near the bottom of the Mail pane, below your full e-mail address, in this example displayed above: publicjq@oneonta.edu.

19. To connect to the Oneonta Exchange server and download your mail now, click on the top button toolbar. Whenever you open Outlook it will automatically try to connect and download your e-mail from the Oneonta Exchange server
