Curtis Walker

Graduation Year: 2012

Major: Meteorology

Hometown: Corona, NY

CAREER GOAL
A master's in Meteorology, followed by a career in the field with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration or a private firm or as a broadcast meteorologist.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
An honors student and a member of the First Year Experience Program Board, Curtis was recently hired as an Academic Team Member and looks forward to guiding other students to get the most from their academic experience. He joined the Meteorology Club and became a meteorologist for the campus radio station WONY 90.9.

MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE SO FAR
Curtis cites the First Year Experience program and the many activities designed to build community and make new friends. “I love to meet new people, interact, and get a better sense of the world beyond. It is the interaction with a diverse bunch of people, like me in many ways and simultaneously worlds apart, which I enjoy most.”

Why Oneonta?
I simply loved the atmosphere here. People were incredibly friendly, and everyone wanted to help to the best of their abilities. This was the only school that allowed me to interact with both professors and students in my field. Oneonta allowed me to meet my future colleagues and get the inside scoop on the different activities here on campus as well as in my particular field of study.

What three words summarize your experience at Oneonta?
Work - The workload has definitely been stressful some weeks. However, you get what you put in, and the more you put in to your college experience, the more you get back.

Fun - Work Hard, Play Hard. The hours spent hanging out with friends and enjoying what Oneonta has to offer were fun. We’ve made many midnight runs to WalMart to shop for snacks and countless visits to Brooks BBQ and China 19.

Grow - College is the separation of the final ties with childhood, and the amount of independence you have can be scary at first. At the end of the day, the decisions you make are yours and yours only.

What advice do you have for high school students considering Oneonta?
Do your best and never less. College is a whole new ballgame, and you can make a difference. When one journey ends, another begins. Learn from all your experiences and listen to your heart and mind; they will give you all the guidance you need. Know that you are never walking this road alone, as there is always someone to catch you if you ever fall.
