Julia Backus

Graduation Year: 2009

Majors: Computer Art and Communication Studies with a minor in Advertising

Hometown: Saugerties, NY

CAREER GOAL:
To work for a design firm in branding and marketing.

MOST INFLUENTIAL CLASS:
Julia recalls Advanced Graphic Publication and Print Design with Katherine Spitzhoff. “This class really showed me that I wanted to pursue a job in the graphic design world, whether it is information design, packaging design, or brand marketing. She was a wonderful teacher who really knew how to push her students to do the best that they could. I spent a lot of long nights in the computer lab doing projects, but they were all worth it and I loved doing them.” Julia later completed an internship with the Graphic Design and Publications Office at the College.

MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE:
Julia was involved in the Oneonta Gulf Coast Collaboration, a group of students who raised money and made several trips to Mississippi and Louisiana to volunteer after Hurricane Katrina. “I did this my freshman year and it made a lasting impression on me. With all the destruction, fear, and uncertainty, there was a sense of hope and determination as well. I met countless amazing people volunteering in Biloxi and the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans.”

ACTIVITIES AND HONORS:
Julia was selected for an Oneonta Presidential Scholarship, named one of Oneonta’s Best and Brightest, and had her photography exhibited at the Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition for three successive years. She served as treasurer of the Omicron Delta Kappa national leadership honor society, Vice President of the campus Habitat for Humanity, a Resident Advisor, and Vice President of the Resident Student Organization. In her junior year, she produced the advertisements and publications promoting the World’s Largest Soccer Game on campus.

Why Oneonta?
I actually came here because of the fashion program. But then I started taking computer art classes and I really liked it, and I knew this was something I could see myself doing as a career. Everyone here is so friendly. People encouraged me to be involved and to go for what I wanted. That’s helped give me confidence in myself and a willingness to try new things.

What three words summarize your experience at Oneonta?
Involved, Fulfilling, Amazing.

What advice do you have for high school students considering Oneonta?
No matter what school you choose to attend, make the most of what your school offers and become involved in activities and groups that you really love and have a passion for. Try to learn as much as you can and make the most of just being at college, and don't forget to have fun at the same time.
