Full-time Hours / Part-time Hours
Full-time. A student registered for at least 12 s.h. of course work in a Fall or Spring semester is classified as a full-time student in that semester (or 9 s.h. in the case of graduate assistants). Students enrolled in 6 s.h. or more in the Summer term(s) are classified as full time students. Graduate students should be aware that most types of financial aid require that the student is classified as a full-time student.
Part-time. A student registered for fewer than the minimum number of hours noted above is considered to be a part-time student.
Continuous/Non-continuous Semester Enrollment
When students begin their graduate program of study, they will be asked to indicate whether or not they expect to attend each Fall and Spring semester until they complete the degree. Students who intend to enroll for at least one semester hour in each semester until the completion of the degree will be considered continuously enrolled. Students who expect to enroll in zero semester hours during a Fall or Spring semester should indicate on their application that they will be non-continuously enrolled.
If circumstances require that a student who had indicated an intention to remain continuously enrolled to take a semester off (e.g., the courses needed are not available, a personal emergency arises, etc.), the student should notify the Office of Graduate Studies that they wish to amend their status to non-continuous semester enrollment. This notification allows the record to reflect that the student is still matriculated in the program and will be returning. As always, students are strongly urged to discuss any changes in their program of study or enrollment status with their assigned advisor.
