Program purposes and philosophy: The Master of Arts in Earth Science provides advanced study for students who wish to pursue a career in the specific fields of geology or water resources, or who desire a broad background in earth science. Graduates may use the Master of Arts degree as preparation for doctoral studies or as training for a variety of careers, such as employment with consulting firms, government agencies, industry, or secondary or junior college teaching.

Non-degree students should not enroll in more than 9 s.h. of graduate courses before applying to a degree program.

No more than 16 s.h. may be transferred into this program. Courses with grades of "B-" through "F" are not transferable.

Admission Requirements

All students applying for admission to degree status are required to:

  1. Submit a completed application and the non-refundable fee.
  2. Submit an official transcript of an earned Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college, consisting of at least 24 s.h. in earth sciences courses, 6 s.h. each in chemistry and physics, and 6 s.h. in calculus or in calculus and statistics.
  3. Have a GPA of 3.0 in all undergraduate science courses.
  4. Submit three letters of recommendation (required for all students who did not complete their undergraduate studies in earth sciences at the College at Oneonta).
  5. Submit official scores from the GRE General Test.

Admission is competitive, and meeting the minimum admission criteria does not guarantee acceptance.

Degree Requirements: M.A. in Earth Science

  1. At least 32 s.h. of approved courses beyond the baccalaureate degree including 24 s.h. of Earth Sciences courses.
  2. Minimum GPA of 3.0.
  3. Thesis*.
  4. Corollary courses in related fields may be included.
  5. Comprehensive Examination.
  6. Students must complete all degree requirements within six years and complete a minimum of 16 s.h. in residence.

*Satisfactory completion of a formal field course or evidence of comparable experience is required prior to undertaking a thesis problem. No more than 6 s.h. for Research and Thesis may be counted toward degree requirements.
