ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Oneonta's community radio station,
WUOW-FM 104.7, has installed
new emergency-alert equipment to enable emergency service providers in the
Oneonta area to get important messages to residents of the town and city of
Oneonta.
A new telephone interface will allow city and town officials, police, and
fire departments to gain immediate access to the public radio airwaves. The
interface will work from any telephone, including cell phones. Officials
will be able to dial a local phone number, enter an access code, and
instantly broadcast a civil emergency message, regardless of the time of
day. The message will be broadcast on WUOW, cable channel 23, and WUOW's
webstream.
The messages--such as evacuation orders in the time of floods, other
natural emergencies, or police emergencies--would override whatever
programming is airing on WUOW at the time.
WUOW is a public-radio affiliate, non-profit, commercial-free radio station
that serves the city and town of Oneonta.
