ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Human Ecology Club and the Phi Upsilon Omicron
Human Ecology honor society of the SUNY College at Oneonta will sponsor a
spaghetti dinner at the Elks Club at 86 Chestnut Street in Oneonta from 4
p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, December 8. Proceeds from the event--which will
also feature a silent auction, cash bar, and band--will benefit the Violence
Intervention Program of Opportunities for Otsego. Admission is $6.50 for
adults and $3.50 for children, and tickets are available from the
SUNY-Oneonta Human Ecology Department, the Opportunities for Otsego office
at 3 West Broadway, or at the door. Members of the community are invited to
participate.
The event is the first installment in a series to raise money and
awareness about ending violence against women and children. The students are
working with Opportunities for Otsego and the
Violence Intervention Program
to raise funds for their programs that help women and children attempting to
overcome violence, and several Opportunities for Otsego employees will
volunteer their time at the fundraiser.
The SUNY-Oneonta students are also holding a silent auction throughout
the semester and soliciting contributions for the auction from community
business owners. The students will also stage a production of the play "The
Vagina Monologues" on campus in February as part of the global V-Day
movement to stop violence against women and girls. Through V-Day campaigns,
local volunteers and college students produce annual benefit performances of
the play to raise awareness and funds for anti-violence groups within their
own communities.
The local events are being coordinated by Veronica Acevedo, a senior at
SUNY-Oneonta majoring in
Child and Family Studies and
Theatre, who serves as
President of the Human Ecology Club and Phi Upsilon Omicron. More
information is available from Ms. Acevedo at (607) 436-1927.
