SUNY-ONEONTA GRADUATE EARNS EARTH SCIENCE TEACHING AWARD

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Carol Tichio, a 2005 graduate of the SUNY College at Oneonta who teaches Earth Science at Arcadia High School in the Scottsdale Unified School District in Arizona, has received the 2007 Outstanding Earth Science Teacher Award from the Southwestern Section of the National Association of Geoscience Teachers (NAGT).

The award recognizes exceptional contributions to the stimulation of interest in the Earth Sciences at the secondary level. Tichio was cited for bringing exciting "hands-on, minds-on" science to her students who are learning about both Earth Science and how science is done.
A native of Hicksville, NY, Carol Tichio graduated from SUNY-Oneonta with a bachelor's degree in Childhood Education with a concentration in General Science and particular emphasis in Earth Science. She went on to earn a Master's of Science Teaching in Earth Science from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio.

In commenting on the award, Tichio said, "A part of my professional objectives is to help my students understand how we learn about our planet's complex systems. The so-called facts of science are not really what it's about. The real science is in the creative investigations of the complex and inter-related systems of planet Earth. Everyone needs to take a stake in understanding Earth. Without the insights that we get from scientific inquiry, we cannot comprehend our dependence on our home planet and how we need to protect our natural systems."

The award was presented by NAGT representatives Kaatja Kraft and Thomas McGuire and Arcadia High School Principal Ann-Marie Woolsey. In addition to a plaque signifying her award, Tichio will receive complimentary memberships in NAGT, the Geological Society of America, and several other professional societies; publications from the United States Geological Survey; a stipend for travel to a Geological Society of America conference; and a grant of $500 for classroom improvements. As a sectional awardee, she will also be a candidate for the National Outstanding Earth Science Teacher Award.
