SUNY-ONEONTA MUSIC PROFESSOR RECEIVES AWARD FOR INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Distinguished Service Professor Janet Nepkie of the Music Department of the SUNY College at Oneonta has been named the recipient of the College's 2008 Academic Excellence Award for the Use of Instructional Technology. She will receive the award at a dessert reception in the Craven Lounge of the Morris Conference Center on Thursday, March 20, at 4 p.m. Following the reception, she and her students will offer a presentation about their use of the virtual world Second Life to promote and produce concerts and other events.

Admission to the event is complimentary, and members of the community are invited to attend.
A member of the SUNY-Oneonta Music Department faculty since 1970, Dr. Nepkie developed and coordinates the College's distinctive Music Industry program, which now has nearly 600 majors. She was promoted to Distinguished Service Professor, the highest faculty rank in SUNY, in 2007.

An accomplished musician who has performed as principal cellist for the Catskill Symphony, Utica Symphony, and Glimmerglass Opera, Dr. Nepkie served for five years as President of the national Music and Entertainment Industry Educators Association, organized four conferences on Academic Intellectual Property, taught a distance-learning course on Copyright for Higher Education, served as a trustee of the Copyright Society of the USA, and chaired the United University Professions Technology Issues Committee. She holds a doctorate from New York University.

Now in its seventh year, the Academic Excellence Award for the Use of Instructional Technology is made possible in part by the gifts of College at Oneonta alumni to the Alumni Annual Fund. In recognition of the award, Dr. Nepkie will receive $1,000 from the College's Fund for Academic Excellence, and the Music Department will receive funds to purchase technology or to bring in a distinguished speaker on technology.

More information about the award and the presentation is available from Deb McClenon, the College's Technology Training Coordinator, at (607) 436-2871 or mcclendl@oneonta.edu.
