SUNY-ONEONTA PROFESSORS COLLABORATE WITH LOCAL STUDENTS AND TEACHERS ON NEW BOOK

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Drs. Alison Black and Anna M. Stave of the Division of Education at the SUNY College at Oneonta are co-authors of a new book entitled A Comprehensive Guide to Readers Theatre: Enhancing Fluency and Comprehension in Middle School and Beyond, which was published recently by the International Reading Association. The two SUNY-Oneonta faculty members worked with seventh grade students and their teachers in the Sidney and Cooperstown middle schools in developing the book, and they will present copies of the book to the students in assemblies at their schools in June.

While writing the book, Drs. Black and Stave spent time observing and talking with students who participated in readers theatre activities in the seventh grade classes of teachers Stephanie Hulbert of Sidney and Ann Olmstead of Cooperstown. Now ninth graders, the students have eagerly awaited the publication of "their" book and checked on its progress regularly. Black and Stave will present the students copies of the book in an assembly in the Sidney middle school cafeteria on Wednesday, June 6, at 12:15 p.m. They plan to make a similar presentation in Cooperstown during the week of June 11.

A Comprehensive Guide to Readers Theatre contains photos of the local students' productions as well as quotations from them about their work. A May "Book Club" selection of the International Reading Association, the book offers practical advice for teachers on how to implement readers theatre in the classroom and how to use it to meet current literacy standards. It includes supplementary activities, reproducible assessment tools, hands-on demonstrations of script creation, performance schedules, and matrices illustrating how readers theatre meets literacy standards.

Alison Black, who has taught at SUNY-Oneonta since 1995, is an assistant professor in the Elementary Education and Reading Department. A specialist in children's literature and literacy, she earned her doctorate from Syracuse University.

Anna Stave, who has taught at the College since 1991, earned her master's and doctorate in English education from Syracuse University and her master of fine arts in drama from Ohio University. She is an associate professor in the Secondary Education Department.

Stephanie Hulbert holds a bachelor's degree in English education and a master's in literacy from SUNY-Oneonta. Ann Olmstead holds a bachelor's degree from Niagara University and a master's from SUNY-Oneonta. Both have also served as cooperating teachers for SUNY-Oneonta student teachers and participants from the College's Education classes.
