ONEONTA, N.Y. -- President Nancy Kleniewski of the SUNY College at
Oneonta announced today that SUNY Oneonta has received approval to begin
offering master's degrees in special education. The College will begin
offering the new programs in the fall semester.
"We're very pleased to offer the master's programs in special education,
which will address an area of growing need in our region and beyond," said
Dr. Kleniewski. "Our work
with teachers and school districts has always been integral to the mission
of SUNY Oneonta."
The master's programs will be offered in the areas of early childhood
education, childhood education, and adolescence education. The programs in
adolescence education will include concentrations in mathematics, social
studies, and English.
The master's programs are designed to provide certified teachers with a
greater understanding of the needs of students with disabilities and
handicapping conditions and to master techniques to provide the most
effective education program for them. The new programs at SUNY Oneonta will
lead to the professional license for certified teachers as well as initial
and professional licenses in special education.
The master's programs will include both theory and practice experiences.
Courses will be offered in the late afternoons and evenings to allow working
teachers to enroll. Designed to be completed on a part-time basis, the
programs will require student-teaching experiences, which may be done in
conjunction with teachers' school responsibilities.
"It's a tremendous advantage that SUNY Oneonta will be offering the new
programs," said Oneonta School Superintendent Michael Shea. "Previously,
local teachers have had to travel great distances to pursue master's degrees
in special education because they had few local resources."
Dr. Joanne Curran, Associate Dean of
Education at SUNY
Oneonta, commented on the College's new programs: "We are delighted to have
increased the number of faculty with special education degrees and
experience, and we believe that our graduates will have the very best
preparation for dual certification."
More information about the new master's programs in special education is
available from Dr. Curran at (607) 436-2541.
