ONEONTA, N.Y. -- SUNY College at Oneonta
History Professor
William Simons will appear in a panel discussion on baseball great Hank
Greenberg at a gathering celebrating the 75th anniversary of his rookie
season on Hank Greenberg Day at the
National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown on Sunday, June
29. The panel will be moderated by author/historian Marty Appel, a 1970
SUNY-Oneonta graduate who went on to become public-relations director and
television producer for the New York Yankees and now owns Marty Appel Public
Relations.
Also appearing on the panel will be Pulitzer Prize winner Ira Berkow,
well-known for his "New York Times" columns and co-author of Greenberg's
1989 autobiography; Aviva Kempner, acclaimed filmmaker who produced and
directed The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg; Alva Greenberg, the
daughter of Hank Greenberg; and Dr. Martin Abramowitz, founder and President
of the organization presenting the event, Jewish Major Leaguers, Inc., and a
leading historian on Jews in baseball history. Jeff Idelson, President of
the Baseball Hall of Fame, will offer the welcoming remarks.
A member of the SUNY-Oneonta faculty since 1977, Dr. Simons received the
SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2002. He serves as
director of the Cooperstown Symposium on Baseball and American Culture and
has edited several volumes of collected presentations from the symposia. A
recipient of the 1992 Meckler Award for baseball writing and research, he
has written extensively on baseball, sports history, and sports as a
reflection of society.
