ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The
Secondary Education Department of the SUNY
College at Oneonta presented Awards for Exemplary Service to five area
teachers and a student-teaching supervisor at the annual Celebration of
Teaching Reception on May 1 in the College's Morris Conference Center. In
addition to the awards, the reception recognized all area teachers who have
contributed their time and expertise to the College's Secondary Education
program.
The annual Awards for Exemplary Service were presented to the following
teachers:
- Stephanie Tinker, who received the award in Social Studies
Education, has been an educator for 34 years, 32 of them at Cobleskill-Richmondville
Central School, where she teaches Global History, Economics, and
Geography. A resident of Middleburgh, she holds a bachelor's degree from
SUNY-Plattsburgh and a master's from SUNY-Oneonta.
- Kevin Stevens, who received the award in Science Education,
has taught Earth Science and Chemistry at Milford Central School for
nine of his 12 years as an educator. He resides in Milford and holds
both a bachelor's and master's degree from SUNY-Oneonta.
- Meg Subik, who received the award in Science Education, has taught
at Milford Central School for ten of her 12 years in education. She
teaches Regents Biology, AP Biology, and Physics. A resident of Milford,
she holds a bachelor's degree from Hartwick College and a master's from
SUNY-Oneonta.
- Mary Ann Pinney, who received the award in Family and Consumer
Sciences Education, has taught in the Franklin Central School district
for 30 years of a 34-year career. She currently teaches Family and
Consumer Sciences courses to grades 6-12. A Franklin resident, she holds
a bachelor's degree from SUNY-Oneonta and a master's from the University
of Connecticut.
- Catherine Scalera Weidman, who received the award in Mathematics
Education, has been an educator for 33 years. She teaches AP Calculus
and Math B at Cobleskill-Richmondsville Central School. A resident of
Cobleskill, she holds a bachelor's degree from SUNY-Cortland and a
master's from SUNY-Oneonta.
- Samuel Cadden, who has supervised student teachers in Social Studies
Education at SUNY-Oneonta for 11 years, taught for over 30 years in the
Susquehanna Valley Central School District. He taught Social Studies
courses for grades 7-12 with an emphasis on New York State and American
History, American Government, and Economics. A resident of Binghamton,
he holds degrees from St. Bonaventure University, the University of
Scranton, and SUNY-Cortland.
To be eligible for the Awards for Exemplary Service, a teacher must have
a minimum of five years of experience working with the College as a
cooperating teacher or college supervisor. The teachers, who serve as
role models for SUNY-Oneonta students, must demonstrate high standards
of knowledge in content and pedagogy, service to the school and
community, and a love of learning.
