63 NEW SCHOLARSHIPS ESTABLISHED AT SUNY-ONEONTA

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Students at the SUNY College at Oneonta will benefit directly from the success of the recently concluded five-year campaign, Changing Lives Since 1889. During the course of the campaign, 63 new scholarships were created, including 28 in the past year alone.
Several of the new scholarships were established by area residents with ties to the College:

  • The James and Joyce Broe Family Scholarship was created from the gifts of James and Joyce Broe of Colliersville and their family members to celebrate their family legacy at the College. It will be awarded to students who demonstrate a high need for financial aid and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher.

  • The Scholarship for Excellence in Water Resources, Geology, and Earth Sciences was endowed by Distinguished Teaching Professor emeritus Dr. Arthur Palmer, who taught in the College's Earth Sciences Department for many years, and his wife, Margaret, who earned her master's degree from the College. Created as an incentive for students to continue their academic excellence, the scholarship will be awarded to sophomores or juniors who have earned an overall GPA of 2.8 or higher and are majoring in either Water Resources, Geology, or Earth Science.

  • The Angelo and Emily Franco Scholarship was created by Kathryn Franco '67, who served as a librarian at the College for many years, to honor her parents, Angelo and Emily Franco, and the value they placed on education. It will be awarded to "average" students who are Education majors with financial need and a strong work ethic.

  • The Jane M. Hazzard '56 Scholarship was created by Jane Monser Hazzard '56, former Director of Alumni Affairs at the College, who passed away in 2006. It will be awarded to full-time students who demonstrate financial need and are non-traditional age.
In the 2006-07 fiscal year, the College made nearly 900 scholarship awards to students with a total value of approximately $1.5 million. Those figures represent substantial increases in both the number and amount awarded through scholarships in five years. In the 2001-02 fiscal year, just prior to the launch of the campaign, the College made 523 scholarship awards with a total value of $536,000.

Private scholarships at the College are coordinated through the College at Oneonta Foundation, a non-profit organization that facilitates charitable giving to the College and manages the College's endowment. Sheila Sheridan Striffler '72 of New Canaan, Connecticut, serves as President of the College Foundation Board of Directors and served as co-chair of the campaign.

Paul J. Adamo, Vice President for College Advancement and Executive Director of the College at Oneonta Foundation commented on the significance of the new scholarships established during the campaign: "We appreciate everyone who supports the College, and it's particularly gratifying that people understand the importance of scholarships. Beyond the financial incentives that scholarships provide, they are an investment in the future of our students and a recognition of the outstanding work of our students and our College."
