ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Senior
Business Economics
major Ken Stannard of the SUNY College at Oneonta will join recent
SUNY-Oneonta graduates Andy Wahila (2006) and Matt Durkin (2007) in a
2,800-mile "Run Across America" beginning on February 1. The three runners
will begin their four-month cross-country adventure at the Atlantic Ocean in
Savannah, Georgia, and follow a southern route until they reach the Pacific
Ocean in San Diego, California.
They plan to run about 25 miles per day and to finish the trip on June 1.
During the final two weeks of the trip, they will be joined in the run by
SUNY-Oneonta graduates Dan Verdi (2004) and Rick DeCarr (2007). All of the
runners are former members of the College's
cross country and track
teams.
The runners plan to make the trip with no aid from support vehicles, and
they will carry supplies in a baby jogger. They will spend most nights in a
tent and stay occasionally in hotels along the route.
The run will raise money for a memorial scholarship fund in honor of
Wahila's cousin, PFC Philip Diaferio of Endicott, who was killed in an
automobile accident in November while home on leave from his tour of duty in
Iraq. All proceeds will be used towards a scholarship in Diaferio's name for
a graduating senior from Union-Endicott High School.
More details about the runners' plans, route, and background are
available on the web at www.nationrun.com.
