ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Hundreds of alumni, their families, and friends of
the SUNY College at Oneonta will return to campus for Reunion Weekend 2008
from Friday, June 6, through Sunday, June 8. In addition to gatherings and
athletic competitions, the College's Alumni Association will present its
annual awards in recognition of outstanding contributions to the College.
The reunion celebration begins with golf and tennis tournaments during
the day on Friday and a kick-off party on campus in the evening. On Saturday
during a 10 a.m. reception in the Hunt Union Ballroom, College President
Alan B. Donovan will welcome guests to the campus, and the Alumni
Association Awards will be presented. Saturday's calendar also includes the
popular reunion barbecue at the Hunt Union at noon.
On Saturday afternoon, President and Mrs. Donovan will host a special
reception for substantial donors in the Fine Arts Building courtyard, which
will include the dedication of the
Martin-Mullen
Art Gallery. The gallery is being named in honor of two distinguished
faculty members in the College's
Art Department, Professors emeriti James
Mullen and Minnie Ann Martin.
Through donors who prefer to remain anonymous, the College at Oneonta
Foundation received gift commitments of $250,000 to name the Martin-Mullen
Art Gallery and to establish an endowed fund. Eighty per cent of the
expendable investment income from the fund will support scholarships for
students in art programs, and 20% will support programming in the gallery.
The gallery, which will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday,
will feature an exhibit of approximately 30 student prints collected by
Professor Mullen during his teaching career as well as a print of his own
and a painting by Minnie Ann Martin.
At 6 p.m. on Saturday, the first
Music Department Hall
of Fame induction will take place in the dance studio of the Alumni Field
House. The hall of fame will honor former SUNY-Oneonta students who have
gone on to excel in musical fields, as well as the faculty who helped
prepare them.
Saturday evening will feature the alumni reunion banquet at 6:30 p.m. in
the Dewar Arena of the Alumni Field House, and Saturday's events will wrap
up with a dance party from 9:30 p.m. to midnight in the field house. Events
scheduled for Sunday include outdoor activities at the
College Camp.
Special groups gathering this year include Women's Glee Club alumni and
Educational Opportunity Program alumni, who will celebrate the 40th
anniversary of the program at the College.
At Saturday's reception, the Alumni Association Awards will honor alumni,
friends, and faculty of the College:
- Dr. Lawrence Guzy of Oneonta, Distinguished Teaching Professor in
the Psychology Department, will receive the Outstanding Faculty Service
Award.
- Dr. Bernard Cleveland '58, '61G, of Big Canoe, Georgia, author of
"Master Teaching Techniques" and creator of professional-development
