Gary Lawless is the author of 14 collections of poetry, including
"First Sight of Land," "Caribouddhism," and "In Ruins." He has also

internationally recognized, and his poems have been translated into
eight languages. He is also the founder and publisher of Blackberry
Books, a small press devoted to bringing Maine classics back into

After graduating from Colby College in 1973, Lawless traveled to
California to study as an apprentice with Pulitzer-Prize-winning
poet Gary Snyder. When Lawless returned to Maine, he published his
first poetry chapbook, "Full Flower Moon," and became active in
social justice and environmental causes. For many years, he has
worked with the Maine Arts Commission to bring writing workshops to
schools, prisons, nursing homes, and refugee communities in Maine.
The Red Dragon Reading Series, organized by the
English

campus for presentations to classes and the community. The series is
funded in part by Poets and Writers, Inc., with funds from the New
York State Council on the Arts.
