SUNY ONEONTA SUCCESS CONTINUES WITH NEW PRESIDENT AND NEW ACADEMIC YEAR

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- With Dr. Nancy Kleniewski as its new President, the SUNY College at Oneonta is prepared for another successful academic year as students have returned to campus for the start of classes on Wednesday, August 27. The College has again met its enrollment targets with 1,015 new freshmen and 535 new transfer students among its student population of over 5,800.

For the 2008-09 academic year, SUNY Oneonta has attracted another talented freshman class, whose academic profile includes a mean high school average of 90.4 and a mean combined SAT score of 1137. The College received over 12,500 applications for freshman admission this year and accepted 37.3% of freshman applicants.

College President Nancy Kleniewski, who was appointed in July, will welcome more than 50 new faculty and staff this year, including several faculty in newly created positions. The College employs more than 1,200 workers in faculty, staff, support, and auxiliary services positions.
The returning faculty and staff includes five members who were recently honored by SUNY: Associate Professor Stephen Walsh of the Department of Management, Marketing and Information Systems; Associate Professor Donna Vogler of the Biology Department; and Assistant Professor William Ashbaugh of the History Department, all of whom received the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching; Associate Librarian and Acting Head of Reference and Instruction Nancy Cannon, who received the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Librarianship; and Associate Vice President for Facilities Thomas Rathbone, who received the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Professional Service.

The College will present approximately 900 scholarship awards to students this year, totaling about $1.5 million in value. Several new scholarships have been established through the College's new campaign, Visions/Solutions: The Fund for Science and Technology. The campaign has already raised over $1 million in gifts, grants, and written commitments on the way to its goal of $4 million by June 2010. SUNY Oneonta has ranked first among SUNY colleges for seven successive years in the percentage of alumni making a gift to their alma mater.

SUNY-Oneonta continues its program to improve campus facilities. The recently completed rehabilitation of Science Building I includes a state-of-the-art digital planetarium/theater. Through digital-imaging technology, students and visitors will be able to explore the galaxy as well as virtual attractions in many other areas such as clouds, caves, or the inside of the human body. The building also features modern labs and classrooms, new utility systems, and upgraded offices.

The College's achievements continue to receive national recognition. SUNY-Oneonta rose to 49th in the top tier of its category in the recently released rankings of "America's Best Colleges 2009" by "U.S. News and World Report." The College was also identified by Kiplinger's magazine as one of the "100 Best Values in Public Colleges" in 2007 and 2008 and named to the 2007 and 2008 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.

The SUNY College at Oneonta offers 69 undergraduate majors and 64 minors, including many programs that are interdisciplinary and career oriented. The College offers hundreds of courses and dozens of cultural and athletic events, all of which are open to the public. The Milne Library, Center for Economic and Community Development, Center for Social Responsibility and Community, Morris Conference Center, Fine Arts Building, Science Discovery Center, College Camp, and many other campus venues serve as valuable resources for the community.

Fall semester classes at SUNY-Oneonta will conclude on December 19 this year. Classes in the Spring 2009 semester will run from January 14 through May 13, and the 2009 Commencement will be held on Saturday, May 16.
