ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The SUNY College at Oneonta chapter of Phi Eta Sigma, the national scholastic honor society for college freshmen, inducted 131 new members at a ceremony in the Hunt College Union Ballroom on October 25.

With 353 chapters nationwide, Phi Eta Sigma promotes excellence through recognition programs and scholarship competitions. New members qualify by achieving grade-point averages of at least 3.5 during their first semester or year in college.

Phi Eta Sigma, one of the longest-standing freshman honor societies in the country, was founded at the University of Illinois in 1923. Chartered in 1994, the chapter at the College at Oneonta is advised by Dean of Science and Social Science Michael P. Merilan.
