College at Oneonta News

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The SUNY College at Oneonta chapter of Phi Eta Sigma, the national scholastic honor society for college freshmen, inducted 104 new members at a ceremony in the Hunt College Union Ballroom on October 5.

With over 260 chapters nationwide, Phi Eta Sigma promotes excellence through recognition programs and scholarship competitions. New members qualify by achieving grade-point averages of at least 3.5 during their first semester or year in college.

Phi Eta Sigma, one of the longest-standing freshman honor societies in the country, was founded at the University of Illinois in 1923. Chartered in 1994, the chapter at the College at Oneonta is advised by Dean of Science and Social Science Michael P. Merilan.

A liberal arts college with a pre-professional focus, the SUNY College at Oneonta features outstanding and accessible faculty, students committed to academics and community service, exceptional technology, a modern fieldhouse and athletic facilities, and a beautiful campus. The College enrolls over 5,800 students in its 69 undergraduate majors and nine graduate programs.
