ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Dr. Raj Wali Shah Khattak of the University of
Peshawar, Pakistan, will speak on "The Pashtoon Code of Honor" at 6 p.m. on
Monday, April 14, in the Center for Multicultural Experiences in Lee Hall at
the SUNY College at Oneonta. Admission to the event is complimentary, and
members of the community are invited to attend.
The Pashtoon ethnic group inhabits over 60% of Afghanistan and more than
90% of the Northwest Frontier separating Pakistan from Afghanistan. Though
the "Pashtoon Belt" is strategically important to the war on terrorism, the
Pashtoon culture is dominated by a code of honor that most Americans do not
understand. Dr. Raj Wali Shah Khattak, an authority on the Pashto language
and culture in Pakistan and Afghanistan, will shed light on the Pashtoons'
way of life and its implications for US foreign policy.
Dr. Raj Wali Shah Khattak has worked at the Pashto Academy of the
University of Peshawar in Pakistan since 1978, serving as a research
specialist, director of the academy, and professor specializing in Pashto
literary movements. A respected scholar, he is the author of 12 books and
more than 50 scholarly articles. He has appeared internationally on
television and radio.
His appearance at SUNY-Oneonta is sponsored by the Departments of
Sociology,
English, and
Political Science, as
well as the Office of the Dean of Social and Behavioral Sciences and the
Center for Multicultural Experiences. More information about the event is
available from Dr. Fida
Mohammad of the SUNY-Oneonta Sociology Department at (607) 436-2166.
