ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The National Science Foundation, through its Major
Research Instrumentation Program, has awarded a grant of $41,340 to the SUNY
College at Oneonta to support the acquisition of a Total Organic Carbon
Analyzer and associated equipment. The instruments will be used for research
at the College’s
Biological Field Station in Cooperstown. The grant was awarded to Dr.
Nicola McEnroe of the SUNY Oneonta
Biology and
Earth Sciences
Departments and
Dr.
Willard Harman, Director of the Biological Field Station.
With the Total Organic Carbon Analyzer, SUNY Oneonta will be able to
conduct research in the areas of aquatic carbon biogeochemistry and
metabolism in freshwater lakes and ecosystems. The instrument will allow
researchers to study the organic contamination of rivers, lakes, dams and
other water in the natural cycles, as well as water quality of industrial
and sewage plant effluent, and the quality control of water intended for
public drinking supplies. With the instrument, researchers will attempt to
establish the key biotic and abiotic factors that drive carbon
biogeochemical cycling and carbon metabolism in Otsego Lake.
More information about the National Science Foundation grant is available
from Dr. Harman at (607) 547-8778.
