ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The
Music Department of
the SUNY College at Oneonta and the SUNY Oneonta club "Rock to Cure" will
offer an evening of music of the 1980s on Friday, April 17, at 7:30 p.m. in
the ballroom of the Hunt College Union. Admission to the event is a donation
of $3, which will benefit the VH1 Save the Music Foundation.
The evening will have several bands performing different styles and
genres of music from the 1980s, including The Vernacular, led by bassist and
SUNY Oneonta student Stephen Hamilton, and Outlaw Wheeler Dealer, which is
the SUNY Oneonta blues band. The SUNY Oneonta Chamber Orchestra, led by Dr.
Tim Newton, will accompany Outlaw Wheeler Dealer on some songs.
The night will feature a Madonna look-a-like contest, a 1980s-style dance
competition, and chances to win prizes such as CDs and 1980s memorabilia.
SUNY Oneonta student Sean Blaney of the student radio station WONY will
serve as master of ceremonies for the evening.
Organizers of the event include faculty member Tony Scafide of the SUNY
Oneonta Music Department, President of Rock to Cure Dan Mullins, and several
SUNY Oneonta music students including Nathan D'Oria, Stephen Hamilton, and
Brandon Snell.
Rock to Cure at SUNY Oneonta is a club sponsored by the SUNY Oneonta
Student Association. The VH1 Save The Music Foundation is a non-profit
organization dedicated to restoring instrumental music education in American
public schools and raising awareness about the importance of music as part
of each child's complete education.
