ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Middle States Commission on Higher Education,
the agency responsible for accrediting degree-granting institutions of
higher education in the Middle States region, reaffirmed the accreditation
of the SUNY College at Oneonta at the commission's session on November 20.
Based on its five-year Periodic Review Report, the College received the
commission's most positive action: re-affirmation of accreditation without
the need for a progress letter, monitoring report, or supplemental report.
The College's next regularly scheduled decennial review by Middle States
will take place in 2012-13.
Commenting on the commission's decision, SUNY Oneonta President Nancy
Kleniewski said, "Our re-affirmation by Middle States is significant in that
it's a re-affirmation of our commitment to educational excellence, access,
and accountability. Our entire campus community deserves credit for its
continuing good work in providing a top-quality educational experience for
our students."
The Middle States Commission on Higher Education accredits colleges and
universities in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey,
New York, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and several
locations internationally. The Commission is a voluntary, non-governmental,
membership association that defines, maintains, and promotes educational
excellence across institutions with diverse missions, student populations,
and resources. Middle States accreditation instills public confidence in
institutional mission, goals, performance, and resources through its
rigorous accreditation standards and their enforcement.
The five-year periodic review at SUNY Oneonta was one stage of the Middle
States Commission's review for re-accreditation, which all accredited
colleges undergo every 10 years. In 2012-13, Middle States team members with
various areas of specialization will visit SUNY Oneonta to meet with campus
groups, faculty, staff, and students to evaluate the campus based on the
Middle States Characteristics of Excellence in Higher Education,
which focus on both institutional context and educational effectiveness.
The Middle States Commission on Higher
Education (3624 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104 [267-284-5000]) is
