ONEONTA, N.Y. -- For the fifth successive year, Kiplinger's magazine has named SUNY Oneonta among its "Kiplinger 100 Best Values in Public Colleges." The annual rankings, released today, identify "four-year institutions that deliver a stellar education at an affordable price," according to a Kiplinger's news release.

SUNY Oneonta was included in Kiplinger's list for the first time in 2007, with the #98 ranking. Now the college has vaulted into the top 50, moving from #81 on the 2010 "Best Values" list to #47 this year.

SUNY Oneonta Provost F. Daniel Larkin said the ranking reflects the college's commitment to its students. "It all starts with teaching and learning. That's been our focus, and it shows in these rankings," he said. "First and foremost, that's what SUNY Oneonta is about. We have a faculty that's passionate. They're engaged in teaching and research that brings knowledge back to their classrooms, and in campus programming that adds to the overall experience we offer. Most importantly, they care. To me, that's the key, having professors who are invested personally in the success of their students."

"It's certainly gratifying, yet not completely surprising because SUNY Oneonta's academic reputation has been excellent over the past several years," said Roger Sullivan, SUNY Oneonta associate vice president for enrollment management. "What's less well known but reflected, I think, by Kiplinger's is the fact that SUNY Oneonta graduates have among the least debt of all college grads in the entire northeast. More and more, I think prospective students and their parents are coming to realize that we offer not only a top notch education, but an unbeatable price, too."

Kiplinger's selects colleges and universities for its Top 100 Values list based on measures of academic quality, such as admission, retention and graduation rates, and also factors in costs and financial aid. In a prepared statement, Kiplinger's Editor Janet Bodnar said the colleges on the list "prove graduates can enter the workforce with a great education—and without a huge cloud of debt."

Kiplinger's is the second magazine to recognize SUNY Oneonta for academic excellence in recent months. In August, U.S. News and World Report ranked the college ninth among the top public colleges in the North, and third among schools with a commitment to teaching in its 2011 rankings of America’s “Best Colleges.”
