SUNY ONEONTA TO HOST THIRD ANNUAL
KIDNEY WALK

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- SUNY Oneonta will host a Halloween-themed Kidney Walk as part of the National Kidney Foundation's Walk on Sunday, October 31. This is the third year the Foundation has partnered with the college's Center for Social Responsibility and Community, and Phi Sigma Sigma sorority chapter to raise awareness of kidney disease and funds for its treatment.

Held at the Alumni Field House, the event will include an indoor walk from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., activities, games, and Halloween contests. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m.

"We've been so grateful to the Oneonta community for its strong support these past two years," says Rebecca Conklin, community relations coordinator of the National Kidney Foundation of Northeast New York. "Having our walk here on Halloween just adds a fun dimension to it."

Center for Social Responsibility and Community Director Linda Drake says hundreds of SUNY Oneonta students have attended the Kidney Walk over the past two years, raising over $15,000.

"It's quickly become one of the Center's biggest annual events, and a fantastic opportunity for our students to contribute their time to a good cause," she says. "I look forward to it because 80% of the funds raised are used in our community, so we really do make a difference in the lives of others in need."

According to National Kidney Foundation statistics, more than 26 million Americans suffer from chronic kidney disease, and more than half a million currently receive treatment, which often is time-consuming, for kidney failure.

Adds Conklin, one of the most acute needs of area kidney disease patients is access to dialysis, which can be challenging. "Events like the upcoming walk in Oneonta help us to provide critical assistance to area patients‹things like transportation to medical facilities for specialized care," she says.
