ONEONTA, N.Y. -- “Into the Streets,” the annual day of service to the community sponsored by the Center for Social Responsibility and Community at the SUNY College at Oneonta, will take place on Saturday, May 1, with volunteers serving at 38 different sites countywide. Following the national Into the Streets motto of “Try it for a day, you may love it for a lifetime,” over 600 SUNY Oneonta students will team with community volunteers for the event, which is Otsego County’s largest single day of volunteer service.
The student-led day of service will begin at 9 a.m. with a breakfast at the Alumni Field House followed by a send-off by SUNY Oneonta President Nancy Kleniewski.
Fifty SUNY Oneonta teams will travel to assigned sites from Oneonta to Edmeston and Cooperstown, where they will spend up to six hours in volunteer activities such as painting, cleaning, and window-washing at nonprofit agencies, schools, and churches; clean-up at area parks and trails; and landscaping at a variety of organizations.
Into the Streets is being organized by SUNY Oneonta students Tanya Henderson, Stephanie Griffith, Laurelle Ritter, and Briana Parsons, who serve as student-coordinators at the Center for Social Responsibility and Community. Since fall, they have been recruiting students and groups and networking with nonprofit agencies, schools, and organizations.
Tanya Henderson commented that “Into the Streets is an opportunity for the students to show their gratitude to the town. It is our way of saying thank you, Oneonta.”
Stephanie Griffith added, “Into the Streets is a day when dedicated student volunteers commit to helping local organizations, and in doing so we are given the chance to connect and give back to the community. Planning this event takes extreme effort, but the outcome is well worth it.”
Linda Drake, Director of the Center for Social Responsibility and Community, attributes the success of the annual event to a well coordinated team effort. She describes Into the Streets as an opportunity to strengthen bonds between students and members of the community.
