ONEONTA, N.Y. -- "Into the Streets," the day of service to the
community sponsored by the
Center for Social Responsibility and Community at the SUNY College at
Oneonta, will take place on Saturday, May 2. Annually, several hundred
students and community volunteers team up for "Into the Streets," which is
Otsego County's largest single day of volunteer service.
Hundreds of students in 48 teams from SUNY Oneonta, along with students
from the Oneonta Job Corps Academy, will travel to 36 assigned sites where
they will spend up to six hours in activities such as painting, cleaning,
and window-washing at non-profit agencies, schools, and churches; clean-up
at area parks and trails; landscaping on the grounds of residential
communities and nursing homes; and sprucing up cabins at Gilbert Lake State
Park. The motto for "Into the Streets" is "Try it for a day, you may love it
for a lifetime."
The College's Center for Social Responsibility and Community partners
with local and national non-profit agencies to arrange the service projects
undertaken during "Into the Streets." SUNY Oneonta students Tanya Henderson,
Stephanie Griffith, and Laurelle Ritter have been coordinating arrangements
for the event since last fall, recruiting students and campus civic groups
and networking with the heads of participating community non-profits,
schools, and organizations.
The student-led event will begin at 9 a.m. with breakfast at the Alumni
Field House and a send-off by SUNY Oneonta
President Nancy Kleniewski.
The volunteers will return to campus for a dinner at the Hunt College Union,
where event participants will discuss their experiences and reflect on the
service they provided.
