ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Hundreds of
alumni, parents, family members, and friends will visit the SUNY
College at Oneonta for
Homecoming & Family Weekend on October 12-14. The weekend will
include the Saturday-evening Homecoming Concert--a free concert
celebrating student scholars and the success of the College's
recently concluded campaign, Changing Lives Since 1889. The concert
will feature talented SUNY-Oneonta students, faculty, and Broadway
star Philip Hernandez, an alumnus of the class of 1982.
Other events include the annual craft fair, the ninth annual
induction into the College's Athletic Hall of Fame, athletic
competitions, and a range of entertainment options. Admission to
many of the events is complimentary, and community members are
invited to participate.
Events on Friday, October 12, include a movie, intercollegiate
athletic competitions in women's soccer and volleyball, and a dinner
theater.
The events on Saturday, October 13, include the ninth annual
induction ceremony for the College's
Athletic Hall of Fame in the Alumni Field House. Six outstanding
alumni athletes will be inducted in the 10 a.m. ceremony. The
inductees are Clair Jacobsen '53 (inducted posthumously), who
starred in basketball and baseball; Jan Miller '72, who competed in
cross country, track, and swimming and diving; lacrosse standout
Brian Dooley '01; Adrianne Musu Jackson-Buckner '06, who starred in
track & field and field hockey; soccer and basketball player Kristen
Marullo Shearer '91; and basketball star Ronald Sanchez '97. The
NCAA Division III champion women's soccer team of 2003 will be
inducted as a team of distinction.
The popular Homecoming & Family Weekend Craft Fair will be held
in the Hunt Union Ballroom from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Over 75 crafters will feature a wide variety of items at this year's
show. Admission and parking are complimentary.
Also on Saturday, College faculty and other regional experts will
offer back-to-school mini-classes on a variety of topics ranging
from literature to retirement planning. The classes will be held in
the Hunt College Union from 9:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
The women's varsity soccer team will take the field on Saturday
at 1 p.m. against SUNY-IT. At 3 p.m., a Greek Life Reception for
students and alumni will be held in the Butternut Valley Room of the
Hunt College Union. At 7 p.m., the Hispanic Organization for
Learning Advancement will present Orquidea de Oro, a performance of
folkloric dances from the
Caribbean and Pacific coasts of Colombia and the South American
Andes, in the Center
for Multicultural Experiences in Lee Hall.
The Homecoming Concert, entitled "Showcase Oneonta" will take
place in the Alumni Field House at 7 p.m. on Saturday. Admissions to
the concert is free, and members of the community are invited to
attend. No tickets are required.
The concert will feature singer and Broadway performer
Philip Hernandez,
whose debut CD is entitled The Beat Of My Heart. Hernandez is
a successful Broadway actor who played principal roles in the
original casts of Kiss of the Spiderwoman and in Paul Simon's
The Capeman. He is also the only actor in Broadway history to
play the roles of Jean Valjean and Inspector Javert in Les
Miserables.
