ONEONTA, N.Y. --
Dr. Anne Clendinning, Associate Professor of History from Nipissing
University in Ontario, will present a lecture entitled "‘All the
World at Wembley': Britain in the 1920s" at 7 p.m. on Monday,
November 5, in room 104 of the Morris Conference Center at the SUNY
College at Oneonta. Admission to the event is complimentary, and
members of the community are invited to attend.
Dr. Clendinning's presentation will explore the British Empire
Exhibition, which was held at Wembley in north London in 1924 and
1925. The event was a gathering of the member nations of the British
Empire to celebrate the empire and to foster economic cooperation
among the members. Dr. Clendinning views the exhibition as a
microcosm that reveals attitudes towards empire, race, gender, and
the politics of post-war reconstruction in Britain during the 1920s.
Dr. Clendinning is the author of the book Demons of
Domesticity: Women and the English Gas Industry, 1889-1939 as
well as a number of articles on the history of twentieth-century
Britain.
The presentation is co-sponsored by the College's Public Events
Committee,
History Department,
History
Club, and Redfield Fund. More information is available from Dr.
Matthew Hendley, Chair of the SUNY-Oneonta History Department, at
(607) 436-3326.
